A featherweight camping, literally

How many of you know what a camping teardrop-shaped trailer is? It’s an ideal extensión for those who like to travel lightpacked. But, as compact as they are, they’re often heavy; or so we thought…

Earth Traveler has designed a microlight camping trailer! 136 kg only!

Its secret? Chicken feathers!

Yes, you read that right, the company collaborated with Los Alamos National Lab SBA to make this peculiar substitute for non-structural material.

The feathers are reinforced with fibreglass and resin resulting in a microlight, cost-effective, insulating and weather-resistant structure.

As well as being organic and aerodynamic, it has a capacity for four people, the gull-wing roof (it’s all about birds, apparently) is deployable and the side walls are expandable to create a spacious 3 x 2 x 3 metres bedroom. It has a mosquito net and LEDs inside. This device represents a new motorhome experience for modern world and emerging electric vehicles.

Motorbike-loving campers, we’ve got good news: this caravan can be towed by a motorbike.

Where did this ‘animal’ idea come from? Founder says: “The genesis of designing and building an ultralight camper was conceived during a camping trip in New Mexico, when the excitement of our first summer trip turned to dismay as we faced the reality that the tent was extremely hot during the day, and at night the wind was blowing it down on us.”

The company adds: “Our vision is that anyone should not be limited by the power of their vehicle when it comes to exploring nature and blending in with the environment”.

As it’s handcrafted, it takes between 5 and 6 months from order to delivery. The basic model (T300) costs $10,000, while the teardrop trailer (T250LX) starts at $31,000.
